On March 23, Pope Francis returned to his residence at the Vatican after spending 38 days at Rome's Gemelli Hospital for treatment of double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, who had been hospitalized since February 14, made his first public appearance as he left the hospital, greeting those gathered outside. Among them were some seminarians from Sedes Sapientiae.
Doctors have prescribed a period of convalescence lasting at least two months, during which the Pope will continue receiving treatment and rest at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.
Before returning to the Vatican, Pope Francis stopped at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he left flowers at the Marian icon Salus Populi Romani, a tradition he follows before and after significant journeys. His return marks the next step in his recovery as he resumes his duties. At Sedes Sapientiae, we will continue to pray every day for the health of the Holy Father, asking the Lord to grant him a full recovery, and to assist him always in his generous service to the Church.
