On 21 November, Pope Leo XIV appointed Msgr. Elieser Antonio Rivero Barrios as Bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando de Apure. Our college rejoices in this episcopal nomination of one of our distinguished former seminarians. His years with the Sedes Sapientiae community are a treasured chapter of his spiritual formation—deeply influential in shaping his vocation and priestly identity.

Bishop-elect Rivero was born on 31 August 1975 in Carora, Lara.

He first studied Philosophy in Caracas, then relocated to Rome to complete his theological education at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, where he earned a Licentiate in Canon Law. He was ordained a priest on 18 October 2003 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Yaritagua and was incardinated in the Diocese of San Felipe. Over the years, he has served faithfully in various pastoral roles and most recently held the position of Vicar General in that diocese.

The Diocese of San Fernando de Apure, which he is now called to shepherd, lies in Venezuela’s southwestern plains. It is known for its vibrant faith communities, missionary zeal, and deep Marian devotion. According to the Venezuelan Bishops’ Conference, the diocese covers 43,536 km², has about 307,000 inhabitants, and is served by 22 priests.

As he begins his episcopal ministry, the entire Sedes Sapientiae family extends heartfelt congratulations and prayers. May the Holy Spirit grant him courage and wisdom, and may Our Lady accompany him at every turn. We give thanks for his “yes” to God, and we look forward to witnessing the fruits of his service among the faithful of San Fernando de Apure.
