A Goodbye Full of Hope

On Friday, January 24, Don Álvaro Granados passed away. He was a formator at our college from 1995 to 2006. After his time at Sedes, he worked for more than fifteen years at the San Josemaría parish in Rome, where he was deeply loved, and where he returned, already gravely ill with ALS, after a period as rector of the Tiberino priestly college. At the same time, during this time, he was a professor of Pastoral Theology at the University of the Holy Cross, and worked tirelessly until he published an excellent manual, The House Built on Sand, which condenses his ideas on evangelization in the contemporary cultural context.

Don Álvaro was undoubtedly a priest who left a profound mark on countless people, especially for his human strength and trust in God with which he bore a long and painful illness, always serene and hopeful: "Heaven is a place that attracts me. I close my eyes, think of heaven, and I am filled with joy and Christian hope." It was the eve of the Assumption in 2024 when, with the help of some parishioners, Don Álvaro published on YouTube the last video of one of his meditations on the Gospel.

We pray for the eternal rest of Don Álvaro's soul. Although it is also true that many of us think he is already enjoying heaven, and we entrust ourselves to his intercession. In the days following his death, several media outlets, especially from Italy and Spain, reported the news, highlighting his testimony of faith and hope: by accessing this WhatsApp channel, it is possible to view a rich selection of articles and videos: Notizie di don Alvaro.
