The International Ecclesiastical College Sedes Sapientiae is a seminary in Rome erected by the Holy See and intended for the formation of candidates to the priesthood coming from dioceses of the world.
In October 1990, Bishops, united in a synod with the Pope, underscored the urgent need to promote priestly vocations and to ensure a solid intellectual and spiritual formation for aspirants to the priesthood.
The direction the the Ecclestiastical College is entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei.
Message from the Rector
In every moment of human history the absolute need for priests is felt, men chosen by God to be mediators between Him and mankind. Perhaps in our age this need is even more urgent and evident.
But it is not enough that there be many priests: we need priests...
Sedes Sapientiae responds to a desire of St Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei, who many years before, moved by his ardent love for the Church and for the Roman Pontiff, had studied the possibility of founding a College next to the See of Peter for the formation of candidates to the priesthood.
Thanks to benefactors
I wish to thank the benefactors for the collaboration that they offer. Without their help - great or small as it may be, but always the fruit of the love of God and veneration for the priesthood - all the good that is realised in service of the Church by the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and the International Ecclesiatical College Sedes Sapientiae could not be brought to fruition. Thanks to their support, and above all their prayer and affection, a great number of young men from across the globe are being prepared for the priesthood, who will sow the seed of the Gospel in their respective countries, and in particular in those places where the Church is still taking root or beginning to take her first steps.” [Support us]
